It had been 2 hours since the police had arrived. Chandler was sitting in Joey’s living room, crying. Phoebe was on her way and Joey was sitting on the ground and looking into space. Time was going really slowly and it felt like all their happy days were miles away. They had tried to contact Rachael and Ross but they had already left for Cabo, on their honeymoon.
Phoebe burst into the room and hugged both Chandler and joey and they sat together and cried. Just a few hours earlier, Chandler had found Monica’s limp body in their kitchen. He rushed over to Joey’s house and they called the cops. The cops deducted that Monica had been beaten to death repeatedly with a Skillet from the kitchen. The police then interrogated Chandler and Joey and left them in Joey’s house, which was the apartment just opposite Chandler and Monica’s.
“Phoebe buffay?” Officer Barry called.
“Yes, that me.”
“We’d like to ask you a few questions.”
“Yes, sure” she said and followed the officer.
“Please, have a seat. Can you tell me how long you’ve known Monica and Chandler?“
“Well I’ve known them for so many years, but compared to the others I was a relatively new addition to their group. I can’t believe Monica’s gone! How are the twins? Why weren’t they with Chandler?”
“That’s actually why I called you here. Could you tell me whether you’ve noticed any change in Chandler’s behaviour recently?”
“Well I haven’t met him for a while, what with Mike’s job but he seemed quite fine. Officer, what’s going on?” Phoebe asked hesitantly.
“Do you know whether Chandler still smokes?” Officer Barry asked, leaning forward.
“He quit smoking once he married Monica, but he tends to smoke only under pressure.”
“Well, we have reason to believe that Chandler committed the murder and that-”
“CHANDLER! How can you even say that, he loved Monica more than anybody. How dare you accuse him of this?” Phoebe screamed, jumping up from her chair.
“Calm down ma’am. We don’t make such accusations lightly. Our forensics team has been through the entire house. It seems that Monica has been having an affair with an old boyfriend named Richard. Some smudged notes in her dresser and her phone records confirm this as well. We even contacted Richard and he told us that they met up quite a few times at a place called ‘Central Perk’ I guess“.
“That’s our place. That WAS our place. How could she, I… I don’t understand“. Phoebe mumbled.
“I know that it seems shocking but even the Manager or the cafe, Gunther has been able to confirm this. He has seen Monica and Richard at the cafe, looking very much in love. He even told us that Chandler has been to the coffee-house frequently, asking about Monica. He mentioned that Chandler appeared agitated and impatient. The only thing is that we had no real evidence to link Chandler to the murder until Office James noticed the faint smell of cigarette Smoke in the room. While interrogating Chandler, it was clear that he has been smoking quite a bit. Our forensics team has sent a sample of the chemicals in the air to see if it matches the chemicals in his cigarette. We also found finger prints on the handle of the skillet and it too has been sent for analysis. The evidence is pretty clear-cut and we have a strong case against Chandler.“
“I don’t know what to say. I can’t believe any of this. Chandler…. A murderer? How did all this happen?” Phoebe said, in between tears.
“I wish I knew Ma’am but bad things happen in life and we have no control over them. The only thing I can promise you is that justice will be brought to your friend.”
“Thank you Sir“. Phoebe said as shook his hand. Her heart was filled with dread. She had to go out and face Joey and Chandler now. Their lives would never be the same, and the friendship that they had cherished all these years would be overshadowed by a tragic memory. Phoebe breathed in as she stood outside Joey’s apartment, ready to open the door. The only question she had on her mind was, when did it all begin to fall apart?
I tried my hand at something different. If you aren’t familiar with the characters, they are from the hit sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Hopefully, you enjoyed it and if you didn’t I’d love some feedback. Have a good day!
